Origin and analysis of the film Deserter by Vsevolod Pudovkin. The influence of the German environment on Pudovkin's work. Russian film emigration and its application abroad, especially in Germany. Sergei Eisenstein's Berlin sojourns, his relationship to German cinema, and a brief overview of the reception of Eisenstein's films in the Weimar Republic.
