Beginnings of Czech Video Art

Bohdana Kerbachová

The author focuses on the work of the only official group that was dedicated to video art in the Czech Republic between 1985 and 1992, the Video Branch, which was established within the Union of Czechoslovak Visual Artists. The article presents the social situation in the then Czechoslovakia, where video art developed in a very specific way, in a limiting technological and informational vacuum. It thus expands the idea of what video art could mean in different contexts.
